ANALOGY: When you travel by air, they tell you every time that in the event of cabin decompression, you must put on your own oxygen mask and breath deeply before you can help others. The idea is that meeting your own need is the only way to have what it takes to help others. To me, there’s a valuable spiritual lesson there.
I believe you can’t give love to others well/legitimately if you have emotional needs (like, you need relief from depression, etc.) that are quite unmet. You have to meet your own needs for peace/joy first. I think that loving others by just ignoring your own feelings and doing to hard/unpleasant thing that seems to be a good thing to do for someone else ISN’T the love that is spoken of in 1 Corinthians 13. It says, “You can even sell everything you have and give it to the poor. But, if you do it without love, it’s worthless.” So, the ACT itself (selling your stuff and giving the money away) isn’t necessarily valid or worthy. It all depends on whether it’s being done out of true love, which I maintain is only possible when your needs are met by believing all of this Good News of the Gospel. Much more to say. All you can do is work on learning what is True about a matter and working toward believing it. Then, you will no longer focus on yourself in the way you’re lamenting. Happy to discuss this further.
