If you add up all the things the Bible says we’re supposed to do, it’s such a long list that it’s impossible to even keep all these things in mind, not to mention doing them all successfully. Doesn’t this present a problem? The problem being that we are doomed to not do all the things that the Bible says we should do (and not do). So, what does God require? Read the way Jesus answered this question.
8 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
What I’m believing is that the only work that WE are required to do is the work toward believing IN Jesus and that what he says is True. As we believe this, we will be “set free” because Jesus said, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”
After we know the truth and are set free by it, all the other good works that God has in mind for us will be done BY us but EFFORTLESSLY and JOYFULLY so they don’t even really feel like work. Very few Christians grow to this very advanced point. Most are either not working very hard and feeling quite bad about it. Or they ARE working very hard but are depressed because they are using THEIR tiny efforts which yield very little yet the work never ends. They are working as if under the curse/law.
